In an unprecedented move that has not happened since the mid-seventies, the Bell Payphone Labs is opening its doors to the curious public.
Visitors to the Labs are invited to tour the offices and test facilities that have served for the betterment of payphone-related technology for multiple years, and also experience some of the labs newest prototypes. In particular, the Labs are allowing viewers into the phonetic-vacuum chamber, an environmentally controlled and pressure regulated room that simulates a phonebooth.
"We rarely allow the public into the labs" explains CEO A.G.Belle, "particularly because our work immediately enters the public sphere, but with recent technological developments and innovations in our own lab, we've decided it's time to share."
Coincidentally, the labs are currently part of the Canadian Film Centre, and this particular open house on Friday, February 6th at 6:30pm until 8:30pm shares an opening with one of the Film Centre's own innovations. Artists and scientists alike will have the opportunity to co-mingle.
Greeting visitors and leading them through the prototypes will be Pearl Chen and Laura Paolini, the duo-heads of the Research and Development department, as well as the media liaisons. Some strict provisions will be enforced though, especially related to cell phones. "The labs need to be clear of all EMF and radio frequency interference," Paolini explains, "We're keeping the phonetic-vacuum chamber totally off limits; no dirty phones allowed."
The Bell Payphone Labs was born in 1969 when Payphone researchers took a historic turn on October 26th and made contact with payphones behind the iron curtain. Since that groundbreaking phonecall, Bell Payphone Labs' scientists and engineers have made seminal telephony discoveries and have worked behind the scenes of many technological revolutions that have reshaped the role of technology in the social sphere, and have built the most advanced and reliable payphone networks in the world.
